Welcome to our “Expression Through Movement” workshop, where we invite you to explore the profound connection between body, mind, and emotion. This workshop is designed to provide a safe and nurturing space for individuals to express themselves, release tension, and foster emotional well-being through the transformative power of movement.
Setting: Our studio space, Center Street, is a serene haven, adorned with soft lighting, gentle music, and an open floor space. The atmosphere is intentionally created to promote relaxation and self-discovery, allowing participants to feel comfortable expressing themselves through movement.
Guided Warm-Up: The class begins with a gentle and mindful warm-up led by Larissa Humiston, a licensed clinical social worker and private practice therapist with years of training in trauma, anxiety, depression, and grief, who also is a trained dancer and movement specialist. Participants are encouraged to connect with their breath, release physical tension, and become present in the moment. The warm-up sets the foundation for the journey of therapeutic expression.
Expressive Movement Exploration: Participants are then guided through a series of exercises that encourage free-form movement. There are no predefined steps or routines; instead, individuals are invited to explore their bodies and express their emotions through spontaneous, authentic movement. The focus is on tapping into the unique language of the body as a form of self-expression.
Emotional Release: The class provides a supportive environment for emotional release. Participants are encouraged to let go of inhibitions and allow their movements to convey their innermost feelings. This may include joy, sadness, frustration, or any other emotions that need acknowledgment and expression.
Guided Reflections: Throughout the class, the facilitator offers gentle prompts and reflections to guide participants in exploring the emotional and psychological aspects of their movement. This may involve self-inquiry, visualization, or sharing thoughts and feelings in a safe, non-judgmental space.
Mindful Cool Down: As the session nears its end, the class transitions into a mindful cool-down. Participants are guided to return to a state of calmness, integrating the therapeutic benefits of the movement practice into their overall sense of well-being.
Group Sharing (Optional): For those comfortable with it, there is an opportunity for voluntary sharing of experiences. This fosters a sense of community and connection among participants, creating a supportive network for personal growth.
Takeaway Practices: Participants are provided with take-home practices to continue their expressive movement journey outside of class. These may include simple movement exercises, mindfulness techniques, or journaling prompts to further explore the emotional and physical connection.
